WHEN Cremorne sculptor Sally Zylberberg drew on her experience with breast cancer, she thought of a cloud with a silver lining.

For her, a cloud carries many metaphors, including the optimism of a silver lining. Zylberberg was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and is still undergoing treatment.

Cloud

Zylberberg, who is a regular exhibitor at the Mosman Village Festival of Sculpture, said she called her cloud sculpture Between Heaven and Earth as it reflected the surreal nature of cancer diagnosis.

“The potential of clouds to change and reform themselves and simply to be without judgment or expectation, reflects my breast cancer journey,” she said. The cloud features mosaic tiles in the colours of the earth, sky and sea, and also includes a “silver lining”.

“This Tile Tape is strong, versatile, saves on installation cost and allows me to offer film mounted tile.” says Diane, “And it has quadrupled my mosaic tile business.”

I recently had a chance to chat with Diane Hollycross, a mosaic tile artist whose work is inspired by nature. As I looked at samples of her mosaic tile work on her website, nature was indeed everywhere. Whether she is designing a kitchen backsplash with a subtle leaf pattern or a handmade ceramic lily pond full of rich blues and greens, nature abounds in all of her work.

With a degree in Art Education, Diane came to mosaic tile design by way of necessity. She and her husband were building their dream house in Wyoming. It was 1999 and the tiles she wanted were nowhere to be found. So she set up shop in her living room on a drop leaf table behind her sofa. After a fair amount of experimentation and research, she created her first leaf floor tiles, naturally.

After creating a bathroom floor and two counter tops, her business was well on its way. As her mosaic tile business grew, Diane was on the lookout for ways to work more efficiently. Somebody had given her a sample of Meshmount’s Tile Tape, however she was reluctant to use it, “The roll of Tile Tape laid around for a year,” she said, “ because I thought it was going to disturb the tiles when I pulled it off.”

Once again necessity intervened. Diane was doing a rush job for a library, 700 square feet of 9 lily ponds, 6 gators and 1 big turtle. “I tried the sample of Tile Tape and I was amazed.” Diane said, “This stuff was unbelievable!” During this job she had cut 3’ X 3’ pieces and was able to pick up the entire piece and put it in a box, and it actually shipped much better with the film.

“Meshmount’s Tile Tape is strong, versatile, saves on installation cost and allows me to offer film mounted tile.” says Diane, “And it has quadrupled my business.” The praise was pretty effusive, I began thinking, maybe she should be selling Tile Tape. Actually she has recommended it to countless people.

Putting up her own website has opened a world of customers who love the organic, custom mosaic tiles Diane creates. Check out her work on TileswithStyle.com. Diane has been working with clay for approximately 27 years and is an advocate of functional art.
